Music Library Finland, established in 2008, is a privately-held not-for-profit NGO operation and custodian of music-related resources ranging from phonograph cylinders and gramophone records to modern digital media and broadcast recordings. An extensive holding of printed materials such as books, newsletters, sale catalogues and associated ephemera is also maintained.
Our core aim is to preserve recordings, many of which would invariably be forgotten by many archives in favour of more popular material, as well as to assemble and maintain an authoritative collection of specialist collections such as sound effects, music and production library backing tracks, religious group music and music-related broadcast audio. Various ethnic and language-specific collections such as Scottish bagpipe music and Finnish recordings are also being maintained.
Through the library's MusicLibrary.fi web site, we aim to make available updated collections catalogues and other resources of interest to the music enthusiast, collector and scholar alike.
The first public web site launched in spring 2009 and remains in a phase of constant development with new features and datasets being added over time. In early 2010 we took into operation the first iteration of our library-wide internal database that keeps track of our physical and digital holdings and leads to the online publication of various Music Library Finland catalogues for public access.
Presently we face a mammoth, long-term in cataloguing a very substantial collection of material. Of course, we can never say no to new donations which will be warmly received, whether they be recordings, information, financial assistance or good old-fashioned physical labour to deal with the mountain of material awaiting cataloguing and attention.
Some fund-raising and profile-heightening activities are also planned, but our small team of volunteers are always surrounded by recordings to see too far into the future! Music Library Finland receives support from selective corporate patronage and sponsorship as well as through grateful receipt of donations and aid.
Your comments, feedback, corrections and material donations/provision are warmly welcome. Please do feel free to get in touch.
